What Is Financial Assistance?

Financial assistance means the transfer of money or property to an Applicant or Participant to accomplish a public purpose of support authorized by Federal statute through Grants or Cooperative Agreements and sub-awards. For DOE, it does not include direct loans, loan guarantees, price guarantees, purchase agreements, Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), or any other type of financial incentive instrument.

Scholarships

Many organizations, universities, governments, and private institutions offer scholarships specifically for students studying abroad. These scholarships can cover tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs, or a combination of these. You can search for scholarships based on your field of study, destination country, academic merit, financial need, or other criteria.

Grants

Similar to scholarships, grants are funds provided by organizations, governments, or institutions to support students financially during their study abroad programs. Grants  need-based or merit-based, and they can cover various expenses associated with studying abroad.

Fellowships

Fellowships are similar to scholarships and grants but are often awarded for specific research or academic projects. Fellowships can provide funding for tuition, living expenses, travel, and research materials.

Work-Study Programs

Some University programs offer work-study opportunities, allowing students to work part-time while studying to help cover their expenses. These jobs could be on-campus or off-campus positions, depending on the regulations of the host country.

Student Loans

Some students opt to take out student loans to finance their study abroad programs. These loans may be offered by government agencies, private lenders, or international organizations. It’s important to carefully consider the terms and conditions of the loan, including interest rates and repayment options, before borrowing.

International Organizations

Organizations such as the Fulbright Program, the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), or the British Council offer various scholarships and funding opportunities for international students to study abroad. These programs often have specific eligibility criteria and application requirements.
